At work we use the Cisco/Trendmicro software/hardware for spam control.
before the pdf spam about 98% of the spam was filtered.
counter is at the moment on more than 1.000.000 messages per week.

Getting alot of spam is easy, killing the most is harder.. and at least mine is free.. but i have adresses that start with "ej" @ something.nl which only holds 2 charachters. (which is attractive for spammers)

For system monitoring we use e-mail and sms at work in the standby.
e-mail address that we use is so long and with lot of dot's that we never got any spam in the last 4 years.
I will not be happy when i receive a spam messages in the night on the standby phone.

the only reason why people get spam is because the email address was open and public. I always notice if i work at a new location, and i get a new email address, i never get spam. Basicly because i dont give out that email. But people adding you to there msn, or sending a mail with lots of cc's makes you a target. Good thing my msn email is not working, or can be easily turned of in total :)

there also many spammers that use e-mail generators and use the public available domain information for sending spam.

Still got a few, but its less now. And gmail is on a server i dont control, there are tons of things nice out there but if i cant be the owner/maintainer i dont want it. I dont want to rely on someone else. (and i want outlook)

just for the record: well, you might not be able to "control" google, but you can access gmail via outlook. :)
(or use it as a forwarding account, and just use it as spam filter...)

Just suggestions, I understand you prefer to use your own servers and software - I have nothing against that.

And believe it or not, my simple php webmail is faster then gmail :) but hey, i did win, it seems the pdf spam is gone now. Only had some weird brute force hackers on my mysql. Even if you have an account on mysql, whats the use of it? Cant hack into the box then though.
