For those wanting to use DMX but not looking forward to running cables all over the place, the following product might be interesting:
Mc Crypt DMX 512 transceiver.
http://www.conrad.nl/goto.php?artikel=591088
According to the specs, it is a generic DMX wireless transmitter/receiver in the 2.4GHz band. Refresh rate is 13 Hz using 128 bytes frames (128 DMX addresses), which should be enough for smooth color fades. Price is acceptable too (EUR 25 each).
Did anyone try this product?

Product Features:
1. DMX-512 communication for DMX console and Moving Head
2. One-to-Many wireless communication between DMX console Transceiver and Moving Head Transceivers
3. Wireless DMX Transceiver is interference-free from other wireless devices in the 2.45 GHz band such as W-LAN and Bluetooth
4. Wireless DMX Transceiver uses Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum and there are 16 frequency channels for wireless DMX transceiver to set the transmission frequency and receiving frequency.
5. The communication distance between DMX Console Transceiver and Moving Head Transceiver is around 20m to 30m line-of-sight.
6. One DMX Transmitter (TX) supports up to 512 DMX channels (one universe) in the same 2.4GHz frequency channel. Up to 16 DMX universes (8192 DMX channels) can be controlled at
the same time when all the 2.4GHz frequency channels (16 frequency channels) are occupied.
7. Four data lengths can be selected (from 128bytes, 256bytes, 384bytes and 512bytes) which allow different sampling frequencies (from 13Hz, 9Hz, 6Hz and 5Hz)

Looks like a nice option. I am willing to try if no one has any experience with these. Will need a little bit of guidance from the DMX pro's here.

Hi Bastiaan,
No problem. If you'd like I'll come over to your place and help you install it (and will bring some DMX stuff to try).

Funny enough I use DMX panels on the set but this is a different league without assistants
What would I need to order for a starter set. Would like to combine it with HS if possible.

Hi Bastiaan,
What I've heard is that this is one of the often used and widely supported dmx interfaces out there (the others being especially the enttec open usb and usb pro interfaces).
For your application, you should check whether you can find a specification of the protocol between pc and controller, as you might have to write your own control software. For Velleman I'm not sure, but for Enttec this is available.
A nice direct control free software package is Freestyler (http://users.telenet.be/freestylerdmx/). The supported interfaces should give you an idea of what are common interfaces. They are:

The Velleman is in the list. Other (free) dmx software usually supports less interfaces. Enttec devices are most common. So another option would be the http://www.enttec.com/index.php?main_me ... opendmxusb for EUR 55. I've had a Enttec pro but I didn't find the USB connection very stable.
The best choice i.m.h.o. is the Lanbox (http://www.lanbox.com/), but it works on a different principle (usually you would preprogram it and call the programs using http, which integrates easily with Homeseer) and it's (a lot) more expensive. For testing a cheap interface such as the Enttec (and maybe the Velleman) would do fine.

Today, I got 3 Mc Crypt DMX 512 transceivers from conrad
Only when you mount the transmitter & receiver very close with no walls, then you will get a constant stream.
In my situation : (about 10m, through a wall. with a wifi access point and a bluetooth access point close by)
The data stream gets interrupted regularly, for max. 4 seconds.
So, that will prevent a smooth fade...
I tried various channels. I can't see any difference...
My current zigbee-based solution seems more reliable.

(Also the data stream for that system will get interrupted, but less frequent and usually for about a second)
