Hi Guys,

I did a lot of HS3 plugin development the last months (Caddx/Networx plugin is nearly done:-))

Now I want to start with a new, completely different project. Led strips on my stairs !!!

So I know there are a lot of experienced guys here and I have some question for them:

- I decided to use dimable white led strips (no color) just don't what is better, warm or cool white. Any suggestion ?
- I need strips of different sizes (80, 79, 71 and 68 cm) What do I need to buy short strips, long strips, is it easy to make them the right size?
- I have 14 staircases, so 14 led strips need to be connected. Can I do this in parallel, or in serie ?
- Which power adapter to use ?
- Which fibaro (zwave device) used to control (dim) the led strips.
- My stairs are in 3 sectors divided, so may be I want to control the 3 sectors independent from each other. What will make this different in term of devices needed.
- IP20, IP44, IP65 ?? What do I use ?
- How many leds per meter is sufficient? I wil use a 'profiel' to put the strips in.
- What's a good/cheap (Dutch) shop to order the stuff

May be other question will pop up or may you might have some other advise I need to think about, which I'm not aware of.

if you have really 14 staircases then you must live in a very large house (building)

i would choose 24volt leds, warm white and then you need just one fibaro rgb module to control them all (you can control 3 zones)

how many leds per meter? thats hard to say, it depends how many light you need.

and ofcourse you need a 24volt adapter to power it all

Can you explain how I can control 3 zone independently with one Fibaro RGBW controller ?

with the rgb module you can control 1 rgb stripe (that are 3 colors) three white stripe are also 3 colors (the same)

so 1 rgb or 3 white is the same

only:
white 1 is R
white 2 is G
white 3 is B
and also there is a fourth one, W (i forgot that fibaro is a RGBW module)

so you can control 4 white leds stripes

Why don't you use a Arduino for controlling ?
It even can support PWM outputs for example to use with RGB LED.

And if you want to go crazy , you can use DMX to control them.
There is coming a plugin to control DMX build from a simple arduino shield + arduino, possibility's are almost endless then.

It is way cheaper as fibaro stuff or any other brand and i think worth a shot.

I was planning to do this as well, using small sensors maybe pressure sensors beneath the steps so they light up at X pressure.
The LED strip, most of them , depends what sort of LED you have are ready to cut off every 5 - 7 CM.
And how much LED per meter , i don't think you want to many or they have to be dimmer always.
Same with how to connect series or parallel, this depends of what the controller can accept for usage.

I guess if you use a LED profile, there mounted downwards, you can probably get away with IP20 if its for inside.
Outside is a different story.

Using 3528 strip with 150 leds per meter would be more then enough light, what I was planning for the same project is a Aluminum L (15 or 20 x 10mm) strip long edge used to put the LED strip and holes for mountingto the underside of the steps with the 10mm side to cover the direct light.
I have done this already in my kitchen and must say the result is not bad at all, on the picture it is dimmed to 40%

See attached photo. This is what I bought to put the strips in. For protection and a diffuse lighting.
These are not cheap, in facts it was about 60 % of the total costs. You can buy them at LedStripKoning.nl

I used a Fibaro RGBW devices to control the strips. I devices the stairs in 3 sectors and can control/dim the 3 sectors independently.
For now they are controlled by HomeSeer events, I will add motion sensors later but than also controlled by HomeSeer.
It's nice to control every step independently, but for me it's enough to have the stairs decided into 3 sectors.
