Noddie starter question.

Post by Ian. »

Hi all,

Reading and googling I might be well out of my depth on this venture but here goes.

I have ordered an Ideal opentherm thermostat for my Ideal Vogue Max system boiler and would like ultimately to use Smart Autotune Thermostat (SAT) on Home Assistant for control.

My confusion is which opentherm gateway do I need to get from nodo-shop, SAT accepts MQTT and the Wi-Fi version would work but I also need OT Monitor to read the opentherm data but I don’t see an option to get the data into the monitor software from the Wi-Fi version as I understand it.

If I get the LAN version of the gateway, this would allow the OT monitor to work but I’m not sure if SAT would.

Any help or guidance appreciated.

The SAT github page mentions it can do MQTT or serial. Given that SAT is a custom component for Home Assistant, I suspect it doesn't connect to the OTGW itself. It probably just uses the data that HA gets from the OTGW. There are two options to connect the OTGW to HA: Using auto-discovery via MQTT or using the opentherm_gw integration. The opentherm_gw integration works with the serial, USB, and LAN versions of the OTGW. It can even work with the WiFi version, but then the MQTT integration is generally the better choice.

When the Wemos module on the Wifi version is loaded with the OTGW-firmware by rvdbreemen, it can be configured to report information via MQTT. In addition it runs a server on port 25238 that can be used to connect OTmonitor. The LAN version can handle 4 simultaneous connections. So you can have an OTmonitor connection at the same time that HA is connected. The opentherm_gw integration advises against doing this, though.

Note that the above is just my understanding of the situation. I use neither HA nor SAT myself. For specific information it would be best to contact the SAT developer. You can also join the OTGW-firmware discord server and ask for assistance on the SAT channel.
