Wifi use outdoor

Post by LittleBit »

Wifi is working fine indoor.
But my knowledge is too limited for WiFi and outdoor.
If I want to use WiFi outdoor, for example on a farm
(radius about 3 km).
How should be the strategy ?
Select 2,4 or 5 GHz ?
What kind of antennes are needed ?
Should I use a central antenne or should I place the anttenes at the outside to prevent interference ?
Any suggestions ?

I do not think that with any standard WiFI AP you will get a 3 km radius.
You could add a directional wifi antenna on both sides (AP and client), to make it maybe work at 3 km's (not really 3 km radius)
As WiFi is working in the 2.4 / 5Ghz freq. making the "waves" really small, nothig really big (like a house) can be in the middle, or the signale will be really low / lost.

Several buildings are in that area, so it is possible to use several antennes (anybody familair with a rule of thumb for the sizes of the segments),
of if somebody knows if meshing is possible with WiFI, that would be possible also.

There are several people active in making wireless networks in city's. They are facing the same challenges as you. Therefore you should have a look at their projects. Wireless Leiden (http://www.wirelessleiden.nl/) is one of the oldest and most experienced. I think you can find a lot of answer there.
