Serial port sharing

Post by marunga »

Hi,

Does anyone here knows of FREE software to share a serial port between two applications (share RFXcom with Domotiga_in_VMware and XAP)?

I've seen some apps, but all are around $100

thanks,
m

Found some...(after some days of searching, wikipedia saves the day :-) )

Serial port sharing

Post by koenbelgium »

Hi,

I use the product VSPE from eterlogic (http://www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html). It is free for 32-bit OS (I use it on Windows 2000 and XP). When 64-bit OS is required you must pay +/-25$.

The reason why I use this is to access a serial port on my production home automation system/hardware and debug it on my development environment/hardware without changing a cable.

Serial port sharing

Post by marunga »

Hi,

VSPE works wih console software and XAP client sharing the same virtual interface, but the Virtual Serial ports don't show on VMware configuration. Also, all the other free softs don't work with VMWare (at least from my tests).

Anyone has VMWare working with free virtual interfaces/ports apps?

thanks,
m

Serial port sharing

Post by marunga »

Hi,

The main objective was to share the RFXcom serial port connected to XAP (mcsSolutions)on a Virtualmachine host and DomotiGa on a Virtualmachine guest, and also to see if I could be able to use other serial hardware (like ctx35/15). The VM was running inside VMWare.

I managed to accomplish this the easy way (split serial port using eterlogic's VSPE) with Virtualbox. No success with VMWare (perhaps using pipes will work).

Another way to do it to access RFXcom, was configuring DomotiGa to use TCP/IP [^] (also using VSPE to share the serial port).

regards,
m
