1GB switch in Linksys WRT610N router

Post by Francois »

I am considering to buy the Linksys WRT610N router and upgrade parts of my house LAN to 1GB.

What will happen if I have 2 computers on 100MB en 2 computers on 1GB connected to the internal switch?

Will the entire etwork switch back to 100MB -or-
Will the switch be able to support both??

Anybody experience with this?

Francois

The pc's with 100mbit will communicate on 100mbit and the pc's connected to gigabit will be able to communicate on 1gbit. It's not like wireless where the wireless netwerk will be switches back to the lowest speed connected clients.

If you have a transfer between the 100 MBit and 1 Gbit client, the transfer wil max 100 Mbit. So 10x 100 Mbit clients can use the full bandwidth of the 1 Gbit client.
If depends of the throughput of the backplane how much throughput you will have if more clients are initiating a transfer.

Just make sure you don't switch on 'jumbo frames' because they cannot be routed to 100Mb nodes. For the rest it will work fine because it's a switch, not a hub.
