integrating ip/tcp av devices in the domotica.

Post by labium »

homeseer has plugins for some pioneer sony, denon products with serial or serial over ethernet ports .
but every product now on the marked should have some ports to be connected to domotica.

what i buy now in the av domain like tv audio system dvix mediabox, upc receiver and hd recorder, humax cable tuner and dvr ,they all have ethernet ports used for other purposes like internet tv on the tv , coping files from the hd recorder etc , does someone know if they are to be used for control viathe ethernet by domotica software ?, like rfxcom ?
i want to control them by a server with homeseer as by the ir remote.

What level of control are you looking for?

Controlling these devices via ethernet is not possible in most cases unless they are (open source and) hacked.

What you can do:
- infrared control (possible through irtrans)
- check the network status (ethernet port status)
- monitor power usage (using plugwise modules for example)

The 'Plex' media player for the mac for example can be controlled through http calls. I'm NO expert on audio equipment so I can't tell you what's possible in that area.

i want to control the av devices via the ethernet or serial port like the ir remote does.

homeseer has several plug ins for several specific av devices in the usa this is more common then here in europe . but a lot more av devices has ports these days like the dvix, like upc like humax cabel dvr and tuner, like the xbox like the playstation 3 .

Finding out if a device is controllable by using their Ethernet port is a matter of hard labor; I mean you have to find out yourself. Sometimes you can find it in the specs, but more likely is that it isn't even mentioned very clearly, as I found out this week myself:

I bought some AV stuff this week: a Onkyo (NR series) AV receiver and a HDI Dune. The Onkyo has a RS232 port with which I was going to control it, but later this week I found out that the NR series (N as in Network) AV receivers are also controllable via Ethernet. Lucky me 8) The Onkyo web site however, doesn't give any information about that (or I just didn't find it). I had to find out through other 'channels'.

I also found out that HDI Dune devices can be controlled with http calls. Lucky again 8)
Saves me the hassle of working with IR codes etc.

Moral of this story: a lot of searching is the only way to find out if your devices support Ethernet control...
