Measuring water temperature

Hi all,

As I live next to water (I can get at it through the garden) I would like to measure the temperature of it.
I have a Rfxcom Receiver, so what I now need is some kind of wireless unit to do the measuring. (If needed I can pull a UTP cable to it)
The unit will be located outside.

Any suggestions on that I could use to do this measuring?

Hi wifi
If you have a RFXcom receiver and you do, just buy a bunch of these.
I just received 6 of them and they have a separate temp sensors which can be placed 2 meter apart of the unit. The sensor is also completely isolated. I have now one sensors in the freezer, water and Hvac temps. Until now the the Oregon THC138 with digital display is a great device for me.

The THC138 does look like what I need.
Can the main body (the one with the LCD) also be located outside, or do I need to put it in somekind of waterproof box?
I want to use 'HomeSeer' to do the logging, so I do not need to see the LCD.

I'll be back in the UK again sometime in July, so till then I will hold the order (only need one for now). Or.. Will you sell one of your six?

He Wifi,
It's some waterproof, there is some rubber sealing in the battery compartment etc.
If you place it a bit sheltered it will work for years.
I wish I ordered more of them, because they are very handy, you can glue the sensor on everything.
So for heating, water, floorheating, fridge, freezer its great and you have a visible LCD as well (if you need)
My house is on the waterfront as well and I will show the water temperature soon on bwired.

doesn't the Thwr288 do it for you? This is the one i'am going to use with the water in front of my future house..

Right, It's an option! I have that device also, but it is more for a pool or bathtub. If I lay this in the water, I probably loos it, because of the boats passing etc.

there is a string attached to it, just attach that to something and it wont drift away... its not rocket science to keep it from floating away

Sure.. But if some person on a boat sees it, a string will not keep it from being taken away

I dont know "how" waterproof this thing is.. otherwise put a rock on the cord and let it sink

then keep a simple cord that only you know of to get it out the water again. (or leave it floating midway in the water so it wont get stuck in the sand below)

according to one of the websites "The sensor is fully waterproof"

It says its waterproof up to 1 meter. 1 meter would be enough to keep "strange folks" from taking it away no?

Yes. The submerge 1 meter trick would work, but looking at the info I do not like the temperature range.
The +50C is no problem, but the 0C might be in winter.

I think the best option for me would be to go for the Oregon THC138.

Hmm, that 0 degrees issue i didn't notice that. Also what we both forget too i think, if you submerge it the temperature would be really different too. But i dont think you will get below 0 degrees if you submerge it 1 meter since if you build a pool for your fishes you have to create it 80cm deeps since thats the point that does not freeze solid (so i asume its not below zero then) if you know what i mean...
