What unit to use with a (mobile) floor lamp.

Post by Noel »

Hi all,

Does Xanura (or any other X10 provider) have any units that I can use with a 'floor lamp'?
I would like to have something that I can fix between the power plug of the floor lamp and the power outlet.

Hi wifi,

Xanura used to have plug-in (or actually plug-through) modules that were identical to the Marmitek modules. Last year, they removed these from their product range (I guess they weren't satisfied with the quality/performance of these modules; after all they were twice or three times the price of equivalent Marmitek modules).

But why not use a SAIX12 in the power outlet you are using for the lamp? I also solved it in this way. Looks better anyway.

The girl/wife here does not know where to put all the floor lamps, and as I do not want to keep (re)moving the SAIX12's I thought that this would be an easy option :-)

Hi wifi,

Well, in that case, if Mohammed does not come to the mountain, let the mountain come to Mohammed: can't you build the SAIX12 somewhere into the lamp?

Otherwise: install multiple SAIX12 in all the places where the girlfriend is likely to plug in the lamp and assign them all the same address. Or switch to a different girlfriend ;-).

The lamp is big enought to do this, but I will need to pull an extra cable from the power outlet (the null cable) to the lamp to make this work. I could use the ground cable for this I guess, but knowing me I will forget, and blow things up. (just joking about the ground cable)

Anyway.. The SAIX12 and placing it in the power outlet is making me think... I've got some 'girl' toys that need charging.
As I have some SAIX12's left I might as well put one on that outlet also.. Man powerrrrr :-)

Hi wifi,

Let me try to get this clear: the lamp is connected to the wall outlet using a regular two (or three if it's grounded) wire cable. The two cables are (inside the insulation) either brown and blue or black and blue. The blue one is the nul/neutral wire. The brown/black one is the live/phase wire. There's probably a switch somewhere on the lamp.

What you do now, is build in a SAIX12 somewhere into the lamp, by cutting the original cable at the location where you want to install the SAIX12 and connecting the incoming blue and black/brown wire to the neutral and live connections of the Xanura module and connecting the other ends that run to the bulb to the remaining SAIX12 connection points. You may do this either before or after the switch, if any is present on the lamp. You may also remove the switch as it has no function anymore: the SAIX12 is now your switch.
[edit: Or even better: connect the switch wires of the SAIX12 to the switch of the lamp, if possible, so you also still have local control!]

So I don't see why you would need to run any extra wires as neutral and live are already coming from the power outlet into the lamp, or am I overlooking something?

Hi snelvuur,

Yes, that was my second thought as well. See my edit: it might be possible to use the original switch to control the SAIX12 locally.

Furthermore, in the SAIX12 manual (page 28), I see special options to switch the SAIX12 automatically if a load is connected. In the manual it says: "Automatisch belasting inschakeling bij aansluiten belasting" and "Automatisch status verzenden bij aansluiten belasting". This might also be a solution, if the SAIX12 can be connected between the wall outlet and the switch.

Just turn off/on the switch

Or just use your remote for directly turning on..without homeseer.

Domotica means automatic...lol

build in SAIX

@Chak: Seeing the picture made me wonder:

- What's the plug through thingy we see in the wall outlet?

- You said that you are using a SAIX for this, but a SAIX has potential free wires. I don't see any potential free wires running from the module.

@wifi: I did some experimenting with a SAIX12 and the special options "turn on when load gets connected" and "send status send when load gets connected". Altough these options work well, there's unfortunately no "turn off when load gets disconnected" option, so you can't use this to have full local control. If you want full local control, you'll need to connect the switch of the lamp to the switching wires of the SAIX12.

@Lennart..you're right it's the SAX1

The plug in the wall outlet is PlugWise.
I use the Plugwise just for monitoring.
At the moment there are no plugins availible for Homeseer.

Hi Chak,

But then you don't have local control, do you? (As the SAX1 doesn't have a connection for a switch.) Or do you use the "turn on when load gets connected" option? But what about turning off then?

yep no local control.
I don't need that
But you can always unpluig the plug and plug it again the SAX1 will turn on.

When my HS is not working I can turn the lite still with my remotes via RF or IR

Hi,
I have several DIY units that can be used as "in wire" X10 controllers. The picture Image shows one with a single pushbutton that enables local on/off and dimming control. When X10 ON is sent to the unit, the light comes up to the last set level (with a fixed minimum level). The unit reacts to ON/OFF, BRIHT/DIM/All LIGHTS ON/ALL LIGHTS OFF X10 commands. Big advantage indeed is the "movebility" of the lamp.
