X10 volwassen ?

Post by Coop »

X10 volwassen ?

Hi Coop

I have automated my previous house with X10 and will automate my new house with X10 too. I did gain quite some expertise with my first home however my opinion is that an X10 home can only function with a technical person living in the house during at least a half year just to cope with problems. So after I sold my house (a few months ago) I removed all X10 stuff as I wouldn't want to become a service engineer for the new owners.

This is a short list of issues I ran into. Not all are X10 related but are home automation related.
-The RF receiver has an AGC that needs some time (in days) to adjust to the different signal levels. So it took a few days before all rf signals properly came through. Remotely located rf transmitters sometimes had problems getting through however.
-I use Homeseer software to control the house. I ran it of a cheap Compaq desktop small form factory computer. Compaq is known for reliable desktops. Do not use your normal working computer as it will interfere with the daily
-I had quite some problems getting scripts to run as I wanted in Homeseer but they were all related by me not coping with all situations
-I set up the entire house with cross-beamed passive Infrared sensors. That means that a person is always seen by at least two infrared sensors.
-IR sensors are cheaper in the USA but you need to modify them to 433 Mhz if you plan to use them over here.
-I built a small probe to test the powerline outlets throughout the house to check for noise.
-I installed X10 filters before every noise generator in the house. IN my situation I have to host app. 20 X10 filters. (Plasma screen, computers, fridge, washing machine, Central Heating. In fact everything that has a coil was put behind a filter)

-The automation of my house costed app. 8000 euro. (all-in)

So here are some answers to your questions:
1. Yes. It is reliable if you invest in proper copper lines, filters, software, computer etc

2. If you use proper control software then you can write scripts for that yourself. Otherwise learn into neural networks.

3. Put a filter between the outlet and the plug to be safe.

4. I do not recommend USA stuff unless you have experience in modifying electronics and plenty of time. (BTW I do not know what the influence of modded USA stuff is on your home insurance)

5. In my next house I will most certainly put all switches in the central technical room. That is where the meters are for water, electricity and gas. You can integrate modules into your elec-box easily.

6. Not that I know. Batteries worked over two years in my home. Only remotely located IR sensors sometimes diud not come through.

7. I have not experimented with such behavior as I do not want multiple functions under a single button.

One final thing: Expect problems. Make sure all other inhabitants of the house back you in this project as they will experience more problems than you. It took me over a year to get a stable working house.

Good luck

Maybe this is of any help to you.

Thanx svdhorst

You helped me a lot !
If i use Xanura, will this be more reliable ?

With what components will you read out you'r switches in you'r new home ?

I will probably only use X10 on the gelijkvloers, so i can turn on the gashaard en lightening on and of by pressing a button, also use led lights in the stairs with IR so the lights go automatic on
I think this will be good doable without running in to much problems ? i don't even need a PC to manage this quite simple things ?
