Based on your experience with Homeseer 3: Why would you use counters over devices?
I already have fine working scripts to increase and reset counters.

I think it depends on the situation. If you need a simple counter, you could use the new counter feature of HS3. If you need more (like a statusimage or notes or particular notation) it's best to use a virtual device.
So far, I haven't use any counters but I can see that change in the near future. Another thing to take into account is that scripting possibilities may be limited like the Timer in which I've experimented with. In the end I just created more events to handle a Select...Case situation and grouping them.
