Wireless Thermostatic Radiator Head

Lately I'm noticing that in my home Office it's quite cold but the thermostat is in the livingroom where it's nice and warm.
I have a modulating CV.



Q: Would wireless radiator heads (thermostaat kraan) give me control of the temperature in each room?

Q: Any suggestions for products that can be integrated with Homeseer 3?

Hi DJ,

Answer to your question #1 is yes, but with some restrictions.
Normally the thermostat in your living room will control your (cv) boiler so as to keep the temperature in your living room to whatever you have set on the thermostat. With (wireless) radiator heads you can only set the temperature in that room to be lower than the living room thermostat.

If the temperature in your home office is a lot cooler than your living room with the home office radiator(s) fully on then your heating system itself has a problem. You could try to turn off all the radiators in your house except for the living room and home office room. If this makes things better then fitting radiator heads to the radiators which you don't use during the day time could help as well as save on heating costs. You can program them to "turn down" these radiators down during the daytime.

Better still would be to have your thermostat in the home office and regulate the temperature from there. I believe that Honeywell have a wireless thermostat which you could move between rooms as required.

As for products I've no experience with Homeseer 3. I'm using MAX! radiator heads which you can order from Conrad. Honeywell also make something similar but a lot more expensive.

In the mean time I have been looking at the Honeywell solution which is quite expensive (for my house it would cost approx € 1000).
The cool thing about their solution is that all radiator heads talk to the Thermostat.
So if it's cold in my home office and warm in the living room (where the thermostat is), the system will notice, close most radiator heads except the one in the office and tell the CV to start heating.

After some tests I found that fine-tuning the radiators (closing them 50-70%) which will slow down the heating process but it does allow other rooms to heat up as well..

Even though I would love to have a technical solution, this appears to work. We'll spend the €1000 on something else

With the OTGW controller and MAX heads you can perfectly control your rooms.
the MAX wall thermostats in each rooms will even make it better.

You can control all your heads
example: if you in your office turn up the office wall thermostat or control it on the head.
You can give the OTGW a set temp higher than existing, check all others rooms and shutdown does heads.
it will be warm in minutes, if the room reaches its temp you can set control to normal again.
Rene also has this setup, i have it in demo now.

The MAX heads are perfect and working more than a year on batts

The Smartwares radiator valve is supported by the HS3 RFXCOM plug-in and RFXtrx433E.

The valve seems to be noisy and maybe better not to use this valve in the bedroom.

I am also trying to create a multi-zone heating system. I want to have the boiler regulating the living room temperature in the day time. (Upstairs radiators turned down to minimum.) In the night time I want the boiler to regulate the temperature in the master bedroom. (Downstairs radiators turned down.) Normally the boiler is controlled with a thermostat in the living room.
Can control the radiators via Max! and the provide own boiler setpoint with OTGW. Only missing link is how to calculate the boiler setpoint at night time using the temperature read from the MAX! wall thermostat instead of the living room temperature. Have an Opentherm (Remeha) boiler.

Apart from the (expensive) Honeywell evohome solution which does integrate radiator control with thermostats, there are a couple of cheaper options such as Tado and Thermosmart. But these are basically just wifi thermostats which you can move from room to room. Tado will have the option of a 2nd thermostat soon...

A bit frustrating since the MAX! controls are reasonably priced and work well. Just the missing setpoint calculation link...

you need to read the temp from thermostat in the bedroom, if the settemp there is higher than the temp:
you can set the setpoint higher than current temp in the livingroom, close all valves except the one in the bedroom...

Yes, can close down the (radiator) valves in the living room at night to 17 oC for example and keep the bedroom radiator on 21 oC. Then I need to set the (living room) thermostat setpoint high enough so that the bedroom temperature will reach 21 oC. The thermostat can only regulate the living room temperature so will never reach 21 oC as the valves there are set to max. 17 oC and the boiler will stay on constantly.

What I want do therefore is to control the boiler using a thermostat in the bedroom instead of the living room and for this I need to know how to calculate the boiler control setpoint.

As soon as the right temperature has been reached in the bedroom you lower the setpoint of the thermostat in the living room to a point under the current temperature of the living room.

Unfortunately my iSense thermostat doesn't allow me to remotely control the room temperature setpoint.
The only setpoint I can control (using an opentherm gateway) is the boiler control setpoint.
