Another antenna for RFXCOM 80002 of any use?

Post by J.S. »

I have bought an Oregon Scientific BAR 898 device. It uses a 228 sensor for temperature and RH. Now this sensor is specified for 30, in the kit with the 898 it is specified for 100m. And it really does pick up the signals at this distance, I tested it and measured the distance via google earth.
Now RFXCOM, in exactly the same position as the 898 only reaches 30m. that is not too bad, because that is what the sensor is specified for.
But what can explain this difference. The OS receiver unit does not have any external antenna (so it must be inside).

The RFXCOM has a 17 cm external antenna with BNC connector. Could I use a better antenna and just klick it on the BNC connector. Can you recommend any antennas that can be bought in Holland or Germany (or EU) to enhance the range? I read something about groundplane antennas but I am really a nitwit when it comes to antennas...

Thanks for the answers!

Another antenna for RFXCOM 80002 of any use?

Oke...mving te thing up to the second floor means I now reach 90 m at least. Which is very good, given the specs of the sensor (still 30 m). Why moving up extends the range is not clear, not in this case, because donstairs and upstairs there is both a clear line of sight.

Still: happy with the result. Read about antennas yesterday evening. So would a groundplane antenna still double the range compared to the standard 35 cm (or so) antenna on the 80002 or is this compared with a wire as an antenna? Thanks.
