Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help or point me to where I'm going wrong or need to look?

I've just installed an OTGW between my Drayton Wiser Thermostat and a Baxi Platinum 40 boiler, the goal was to set a maximum flow temperature which I couldn't when connected directly.

The OTGW is passing OT commands to the boiler as before so everything is working as normal, but I see no statistic data in Opentherm Monitor or the web interface and my log just looks like this over and over again:

I do see a correct 'flame' status when the boiler is fired up but that's it.

Update: The data does populate and is picked up when in 'Monitor' mode. But not in Gateway mode.
I have seen a previous post where someone had this problem and was resolved by an older experimental firmware, however as I'm on v6.5 I assumed I'm on the most recent update so didn't think it was trying that?

Any ideas where I'm going wrong? I'm sure it'll be me

A thermostat repeating the same request over and over is usually a sign that it didn't receive a response, or didn't understand the response it received.

The timings in your log show that the thermostat is quite impatient. On average it only waits around half a second for an answer. Sometimes it already repeats its request after as little as 115ms. According to the specs, up to 800ms is acceptable for a response to be returned to the master device.

My first thought was that the thermostat interface might not produce correct signal levels for the thermostat. But if it works in monitor mode, that cannot be the reason. A difference between monitor mode and gateway mode is that in gateway mode a bit of delay is introduced; 32ms in each direction. So from the point of view of the thermostat, that adds up to 64ms. With such an impatient thermostat, that may be too much.

Another possibility could be that the thermostat looks for additional signals, not just Opentherm. In monitor mode, such signals are passed on. In gateway mode they are filtered out. Finally, the thermostat may not like the bit timings of the OTGW, although they are actually very accurate. You can test these last two hypotheses using the diagnostic firmware. Test #3 will report the signals the boiler sends.

I couldn't find much information on the Wiser thermostat, but I get the impression that it is a wireless thermostat that connects to a powered hub. Some thermostats will find out on startup which communication method they can use. The hub may have seen some other protocol from the boiler. And if you didn't power down the hub when you inserted the OTGW in the communication path, it may still be looking for those signals. You can try to power down the hub for a while, and make sure the OTGW is in gateway mode when you power up the hub again.

Really interesting, and you're right about the Wiser thermostat. It's wireless with smart TRVs around the house, it just fails to allow me to set an upper temp limit for CH so I'm getting 80degrees on a 40kW boiler which is no good for anyone's gas bill.

I'm hoping that all means more to you than me. It definitely seems like in Gateway mode there's that ping pong of empty status updates flying back and forth and that then goes away in Monitor mode. How to resolve it though is beyond me, but I'm more than happy to try any tests you can think of.

Switching between gateway- and monitor mode is a feature only the gateway firmware provides. The diagnostic firmware always just passes on messages between the thermostat and boiler (like monitor mode), when a thermostat is connected. Unless we have a different idea about switching the OTGW into gateway mode, you must have received a "Invalid test" response when you issued the GW=1 command.

So it seems your hub sometimes just ends up in this state where it keeps requesting the status message over and over. It doesn't exclusively happen in gateway mode. Then I would again suggest to power down the hub, wait a while, and power it up again. Try this a couple of times with the OTGW in gateway mode and in monitor mode to see if there is some pattern you can recognize.
