Looking for 16 port router (not a switch!)

Post by Noel »

At the moment I have two 8 port routers stacked, but this is some time not working 100% (packet collisions)

Anyone here who can suggest a good 16 port router (not a switch!)

Thank you for any info on this.

If you don't need a switch, then what is it you need? A router with 16 address segments? Or a 16 port switch with integrated router? Or a 16 port hub?

I have got myself a Linksys SRW2024P (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit ... torWrapper) and I'm pretty happy with it. It's got POE and it's on the UPS, so all devices it power are too. In several rooms I have an SLM2008 (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit ... 6545332B02), powered over POE, extending the number on outlets locally. They are manageable, but I didn't explore the options yet.

Are you sure the ports you use to "stack" the routers have the same duplex and port speed settings ?
Can you explain your setup - Why do you have two routers etc etc.

MindBender. What I'm after is a 16 port switch with integrated router.
willem4ever. Why? I've got several IP phones, IP webcams, servers (3), RFXcom and some PC's.
The setup at the moment is.

>> internet (3 IP's)
Goin into a 3com switch (4226T)
To the 3com switch are 2 server connected (both with it's own WAN IP)
Two linksys BEFSR81 (stacked and all setup correct) are also connected to the 3com.
All the above it using good twisted shielded UTP cables.

To keep the above text simple I'm not mentioning the other Linksys router (in the office), IP webcams and IP phones.

If needed I can make a drawing of the setup and post it here.

I Don't know any thing about that model..just searched for green
I know there are green models that will shutdown not used ports to save power.

Today I replaced my old 5 port 3Com Gigabit home/office switch with basic 8 port 100 mbit version..power consumption dropped from 10,5 to 2,09 watt.

In that case I think Pieters suggestion of the Vigor would be excellent, combined with a separate switch because I don't think you're going to find everything in a single device. If you do, it probably doesn't meet all your other requirements ;-)

A good network switch is always a good investment. It's the backbone of your network and it will outlast most of your computers. If you want a silent one, don't go for my suggestion because it's very noisy; I had to put it in a patch cabinet to make it bearable.

Though I can recommend you to take a second look at Gigabit Ethernet and POE. Unfortunately this combination is usually not available in the consumer segment because GB ethernet uses all 4 pairs, complicating the power transfer. So the usually come in managed versions, but that's just a nice extra when you still want to be able to use internet telephony under heavy traffic.

Good luck!

OK let me elaborate:
The only problem I have is that I want 1 device, but like Mindbender is telling thats not easy to get, so now I have 1 router and two switches, all low in power as can be.
And when you find one its professional and consuming a lot of energy and making noise.
So for now this is the best option. And Draytek Vigor is a good router, it has dual Wan Gigabyte LAN and Wireless access.
It has a lot of possibilities and everything works good and very good for hosting a website. A lot of routers I tested made Bwired very slow, most of them focus on outbound traffic instead of both.

I see..
So you have the router connected to the internet and the two switches connected to the router?
(see basic example below)

Looking for 16 port router (not a switch!)

Post by Lennart »

Hi wifi,

If you're looking for a low power solution using 8-port switches, you might have a look at the D-Link DGS-1008D Green Ethernet 8-port gigabit switch. This is the switch that Chak is talking about, having the ability to power down unused ports. I've been using these (both in 8 and 5-port (DGS-1005D) versions) for some months now.

(Be careful though, because there's also an old DGS-1008 non Green Ethernet version around.)

According to a test in the most recent issue of Hardware Info magazine, this switch had the lowest power consumption (both idle and under load) of all 20-something tested models. (Speed of all these models was so close that they didn't bother to publish the results, as the differences were within the error tolerance range of the measurements themselves.) Power consumption for the 8-port version ranges between 2 and 4 Watt, if I remember correctly. (Of course, you may say that the difference is only a few Watts compared to other switches, but these typically run 24/7 and it all adds up...)

Note that 2 times an 8-port Green Ethernet switch might be more power efficient than a single 16-port switch, as these many-port models tend to be "more professional" and often less power efficient.

If you combine the power supply of these switches and possibly your router by using a single high efficiency switching power adapter, as suggested by Chak in some other thread, connected as you've drawn, you might have a good & fast low power solution.
