Biometric scanner..

I dont like finger print scanner, but the ones where you "swipe" i think those are harder to fool around...

http://www.jung-catalogus.nl/content.ht ... t=0&id=0|2

is one for example, and it says you can read in fingerprints, and then let it make a contact if it has a correct finger print readout.

Ok its expensive as hell, but this is something you could use instead of your keys no?

I've got an USB thumbdrive that used the 'swiping method' for encrypting your data, never found any way to fool it.

You effectively erase your own print while using it, and i wasnt able to fool it using any of the 'mythbuster tests' either (even though they did work on allmost any other device I tried out)

On the other hand.... I did have problems with some of the fingerprint scanners that they didnt recognize the prints they should allow.... I probably wouldnt use anything like that for my door just yet (or at least not without having a backup way of opening the door)

Biometric scanner..

It is not always the swipe module that's the problem. If the whole system is on one board, chances are you could bypass the system by unscrewing it, and shortcircuit 2 wires, or put 5v or something on it to activate or deactivate the system.

This has been the problem with the USB sticks, just pull the flash chip out of the enclosure, put it on a stick without encryption... voila, the data is on there in plain text. Just encrypting or enforcing the system giving access will not be enough.

I would personally look for a system where at least the fingerprint data is stored and analyzed away from the reader. I think Conrad has a simple system, but I don't think it is ment for outside usage.
