best hardware for monitoring on/off states

Post by bergenudd »

I want to monitor a number of doors and windows to see if they are open or closed, also, in a few places I want to check if an appliance is on or off. I think the best sensor for the doors and windows is a magnetic alarmtrigger?
What's the best way to get this info into a computer? The optimal solution would be easy to expand with new sensors for other readings.

I'm interested in both tips for the sensor network and the interface to the computer
I will have a separate 1-wire network for reading temeratures, wind and other weatherdata but form what I have read 1-wire is not optimal for on/off-sensors.

I would go for the a Visonic Powermax alarmpanel and a RFXcom (www.rfxcom.com) Visonic receiver (USB/Ethernet). So you can use the alarmpanel for safety and also use the Visonic sensors for Home automation purposes.
