Underground Air Cooling

Post by DJF3 »

Some time ago I read that the earth temperature 80 cm deep is <12 degrees centigrade.
First thought: can we use this to cool air in the Summer?
Trying to find more info I realized that there's a LOT of challenges.

* What pipe length/diameter
* How to keep the air moving and how fast?
* What pipe material? (Aluminium is not strong and corrodes? Plastic? Metal?)
* How to handle condensation water? (Mold)

More info:
static.monolithic.com/plan-design/airpi ... index.html
http://mb-soft.com/solar/saving.html

Has anyone looked at this or something similar?

Thank you!

When you live next to water you can also use that for cooling right?
I think that would be easier.

DJ, this is done a lot and is nothing special. You just don't come across it very often in the netherlands. Try googling for "canadese put" and you will find all kinds of information how to build etc.

If you have a garden you can dig in some pipes.
Tip 1: Got to a floor heating installer company and ask if they have tubing left overs they throw away. It's cheaper for then to hand it over to you instead bringing it to a milieu depot.
I had a whole stack of it.

This tubing can be put into the ground, is durable and the right size.
Tip 2: If you are planning to make a pond then put lots of this tubing underneat the pond (below the folie) for some extra cooling.

Tip 3: Use water in the collector tubes and exchange the heat/cold with a 'warmtewisselaar' that heats/cools the air. Keep the two sections separarted. Water is a far more efficient transport medium then air.

Look for information about 'warmtepomp' installation for some ideas.
The COP value is important here. More higher is better and should be atleast at 3 or above

Hi DJ,
I'm working in the HVAC/Refrigeration and know a little bit of this system ;-)

I can give you some info about this system, but I need some more info:
- Is it only for cooling ore maybe you want this system also use for heating.
- How many kW you need for you house.
- How big is you garden in m2.
- Is there already a AC system in your home or is this the first one?

Grtz,
