Chronotherm 4 defaults to program - WAF compromised!!
With my OTGW connected the Chronotherm 4 room thermostat sometimes switches back to its daily program. I didn't experience this during summer, but now in the colder season, when the room setpoint is manually increased to 20.5°C, I notice that every now and then the room thermostat witches back to its daily program, which defaults to 18.5 °C. The house gets a litte chilly then, as so gets my wife --> the WAF is heavily compromised!!!
As I suspected the OTGW to somehow influence the room thermostat, as it provide power supply to the Chronotherm, I disconnected it. Since then (and as it has been in the pre-OTGW era) the room thermostat works as it should.
So it seems that the OTGW is critical in the power supply to the Chronotherm. How can I check the OTGW output with respect to the power supplied to the room thermostat. I guess a simple voltage meter is not sufficient as the communication with the room thermostat is modulated (voltage and current) over the two wires. And how can I improve the power supply to be outside the critical range for the Chronotherm?

The gateway is supplying a current to the thermostat, either 7mA or 20mA. It seems unlikely to me that you have a problem there if you don't see any other symptoms than the thermostat returning to its program.
I suspect the gateway may be providing an override setpoint for some reason. If it later cancels that, the thermostat returns to its scheduled program. Please provide some logs of when the problem occurs for me to verify whether that is the case.
You can also try to disable the remote override functionality in the thermostat and see if that makes the problem go away.

I checked my log and couldn't find anything strange. But I'll record them and send you the log. I'll try to find out whether the setpoint override can be ignored by the thermostat and if that helps.

And the gateway gives a good confirmation. Well I actually send multiple TT= commands because in Openhab I have a thermostat defined. It shows the program temperature. For instance 16.0 I then click "up" multiple times to the temp gauge goes 16.5 17.0 17.5 etc until 21.0.
I will try and record a log session with opentherm gateway and post it here.

hmm, while getting together my logs I did notice a silly mistake in my openhab configuration.
I do not however see how this could create the error situation...
In openhab you can define an item for receiving through mqtt and an item for sending through tcp.
I used the sending item to link to the UI. What happened however is when I click on the temp gauge in the UI to go up, a command was send to opentherm gateway. And after about 30-60 seconds the opentherm gateway processes the new setpoint and sends this back through MQTT.
Which I receive in openhab and then use to update the UI. Which in turn is recorded as a change and triggers the send to opentherm.
I will continue to test and post updated findings here.

I've checked for a setting in the thermostat to disable the remote setpoint override, but I could'nt find any.
When operating with a manual setpoint of 20.5 °C after a random time the setpoint is being reset to the daily program of 18.5 °C. In this example at 19:45:40.644131
I can't find any indication that the room thermostat is switched back to the daily program due to a (short) remote setpoint request.
When requesting a temporary setpoint override (through HS3 script), the setpoint is maintained and doesn't fall back to the daily program. In following example the room setpoint of 18.5 °C is switched to the remote override setpoint of 19 °C (activated at 10:36:14.443473):
Although the override setpoint is set only once ("TT=xx") it is maintained without the thermostat is resetting to the daily program. However, the normal operation of the thermostat, with setpoint being adjusted on the thermostat, is not stable when the OTGW is attached ... very strange indeed!

I can't tell anything from this log. It starts too close to the point where you claim things go wrong and the PS=1 commands stop the output of the information I wanted to see. I need a clean log (no PS=1) starting at least several minutes before the point where the room setpoint reverts to the program.

Meanwhile I've installed a Chronotherm Touch Modulation to replace the Chronotherm IV Modulation. Problem solved! The Touch seems to be more stable in combination with the OTGW.

Nonsense. I have developed the gateway with a Chronotherm Modulation and used it for years without any issue.
Unfortunately you never provided a usable log that would allow us to figure out what was really going on.
It's good that you found a solution that works for you, but please don't spread unfounded rumours that may give other users the wrong impression. The Chronotherm Modulation can work perfectly with the OTGW.

Schelte, it's no nonsens but a fact that the new thermostat solved the problems I faced!
Let me be more precise on the issue.
First of all, since my last posting, I unfortunately had other issues on my mind than do logging and fiddling around with my OTGW and thermostat and send you the logs. So I had to put the OTGW aside. What I did notice meanwhile is that the screen on the thermostat slightly flickered in 1Hz frequency even without the OTGW so I assumed the power supply wasn't sufficient for my thermostat. The OTGW obviously triggered a problem with the themostat, so I concluded my thermostat is very sensitive to the power supply and it seems the OTGW is slightly lower on power output than my boiler. Nevertheless, assuming the OTGW was designed to meet the OpenTherm specs, it might be on the minimum side of the spec, or maybe due to component variations it could be off-spec. I just had to find a quick way to find out.
The easiest way for me to check whether my thermostat wasn't OK was to test another thermostat. That's what I did, and it solved my problem. Now with my new thermostat I don't experience any of the problems. So, the OTGW seems to be OK and the problem appeared to come from my old thermostat.

That's a different story. Your Chronotherm Touch works better than your Chronotherm Modulation. Could be that that one has a bad capacitor or other hardware fault. That doesn't mean that the Chronotherm Touch works better than the Chronotherm Modulation. That's all I wanted to make clear to other user who may stumble across your post in the future. It's likely also what you intended to say, but your remark came across to me as referring to the two thermostat types in general.

My goal is to use domoticz as a smart thermostat by setting temperature based on human presence and devices being online (lights and tv), but still using the heating curve algorithms from thermostat.
My setup:
Domoticz on raspberry pi2
Otgw connected via second raspberry pi b using ser2net
Intergas HR Compact boiler
Chronotherm 4 thermostat
The problems i have are:
Temporary temperature set by domoticz (tt=?) is cancelled by thermostat or overwritten by program
Screen flickers faintly too
An occasional error 03
My troubleshooting so far:
Remove program from thermostat by setting all timers to 0:00 16c
Testing different VR Values, current value 5
Setting the timers to 0:00 works pretty good so far, TT setting is not overwritten during the weekend yet.
The error3 i get is not reproducible so far but i guess it happens after setting TT
Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?
The capacitor suggested for fixing the screen flicker, is this on OTGW or thermostat?
Could the screenflicker be related to resetting the temp or the other way around?

The gateway is supposed to yield to the program in the thermostat if you set the override with the TT command. If that's not what you want, you should use the TC command. That's why there are two different commands.
The Chronotherm 4 modulation has to extract the power for its backlight from the opentherm signal. Unfortunately, that doesn't supply enough power and the thermostat doesn't take advantage of the opentherm Smart Power feature. To try to solve this problem, the thermostat charges a capacitor while the backlight is off, so it can use that charge when the backlight is wanted. The power on the line increases a bit when messages are exchanged (once per second). This assists the capacitor with the power for the backlight, which may be observable as a slight increase in brightness of the backlight.
An occasional error 03 is nothing to worry about. There is absolutely no reason to suspect that it happens after setting TT. The setpoint change is communicated in an Opentherm message like any other. The chance that an error occurs on that message is no higher or lower than on any other message.
So, to me it sounds like everything is working like it should.
